OpenAI just launched new AI model – GPT-4o
The new GPT-4o model
During a livestream from the company’s headquarters in San Francisco on Monday, Mira Murati, OpenAI’s chief technology officer, announced that ChatGPT will be powered by a new, more powerful AI model called GPT-4o. The “o” stands for “omni,” referring to the model’s ability to handle text, speech, and video.
Features of GPT-4o
Murati said the GPT-4o model allows ChatGPT to respond more rapidly to voice, image, and video input than OpenAI’s previous technology. In demos, she and other OpenAI employees had fast-flowing conversations with ChatGPT, which answered using a lively and expressive female-sounding voice and nimbly kept up when interrupted.
ChatGPT adopted different emotional tones during the conversation and at times responded as if it were experiencing feelings of its own. When an OpenAI employee said he had been talking about how “useful and amazing” the chatbot is, it responded flirtatiously, gushing “Oh stop it, you’re making me blush.”
GPT-4o greatly improves the experience in OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT. The platform has long offered a voice mode that transcribes the chatbot’s responses using a text-to-speech model, but GPT-4o supercharges this, allowing users to interact with ChatGPT more like an assistant.

How fast is GPT-4o?
OpenAI claims GPT-4o can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds, which is similar to human response time in a conversation, according to several studies. Additionally, GPT-4o exhibited improved speed and quality in more than 50 languages, which OpenAI says covers 97 percent of the world’s population. The model also showcased its real-time translation capabilities, facilitating conversations between speakers of different languages with near-instantaneous translations.
